Supporting the troops in Afghanistan

----Bobby Oldham----Under 14 Blacks coach

UPDATE (12/11/09)
The latest update on the Shoe Boxes is that the final wrapping and collating of the boxes took place yesterday with a total of 210 boxes being delivered to the Chetwin Barracks in Chilwel. The boxes will be sent out to Afghanistan from here now as there have been so many boxes collected.
We appeared again on BBC on last nights East Midlands Today, as the boxes were being sorted to be sent out from Chetwin Barracks at Chilwell.
Off the back of the original idea Dawn has had help from a number of people not least the Under 14's but also alot of companies have got involved, be it sending boxes or donating money to enable items for the boxes to be purchased. The appeal has really out stripped all expectations and A BIG THANK YOU to everyone within the TEAM and the Club who have contributed and helped, it is greatly appreciated by Dawn and her Family and we are sure the boxes will give the Soldiers a big lift.

UPDATE (22/10/09)
We are wrapping the Keyworth United boxes up at Platt Lane on Sunday at 2pm, prior to them being sent off to the troops maybe a photo opportunity for the website.

Also we will be able to confirm the total number of boxes we have managed to get in. Initailly we thought 50, this has gone up to 100 and we may now even get to 150!

“SUPPORTING THE TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN”

I have been able, (after much arm twisting) to get a sponsor for the team for this and next season, "Clean as a Whistle". They are a Commercial Cleaning Company, and are run by my wife and her friend Dawn Munns.

They have given the Team £500 to buy a new kit and training equipment etc.

Dawn's son has just flown out to Afghanistan for his second tour. He is 21 years old and in The Grenedier Guards.

As sort of part of the sponsorship in return, because Dawn's son is local and a lot of the regiment are recruited from Nottingham, the team have adopted the the Regiment and are collecting and filling Shoe Boxes full of stuff the lads out there miss and/or can't get.

We are also getting the lads to sign a Keyworth United shirt to send out with the boxes as well.

The lads have all taken it on board and I think it is good that although it is something away from Football its something they can all do together for such a worthy cause and epitomises the Community side of the Club.

The Evening Post have picked up on the story and are coming to Platt Lane this Thursday Evening at 6pm, to interview the lads and take photos of the lads packing the boxes.

BBC East Midlands will be there as well (at 5pm).

We are sending the shoe boxes out at the end of October so if anyone else at the Club is interested in contributing then that would be great, they could bring any items or empty boxes on Thursday or get hold of me and I can organise things from there.

Please use the link below to download a list of the approved items, but if anyone needs any further information they can contact myself on 07920 515 785 or Dawn on 07920 063 783.
